该小组是在分析数百份现有研究报告后得出上述结论的。他们列举了216种能诱发动物乳腺肿瘤的化学物质，其中人类广泛接触的有97种，如杀虫剂、汽油和柴油尾气混合物、化妆品中的某些成分和某些放射物质等。
研究小组在美国癌症学会半月刊《癌》上发表文章说：“所有这些化学物质都是诱导有机体突变的物质，其中大部分可以诱发多种器官的肿瘤。”
